Who is the
responsible person?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, strengthened by the Fire Safety Act 2021 and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, places fire door compliance on the "responsible person" for a building — typically the employer, owner, landlord or managing agent with control of the premises.

What The Law Requires

Appoint a
competent contractor.

As the responsible person, you are required to appoint a competent contractor for any work on your fire doors — inspection, installation, certification or maintenance. That responsibility doesn't go away by delegating the work; it's why we keep an image-backed, dated record via our Proprietary 'Still Standing' App for every job, so your audit trail holds up if it's ever checked.

Ignoring that duty carries real consequences — see the Centenary Plaza prosecution for a recent example of enforcement in practice.

FAQ

Common
questions.

Who counts as the responsible person?

Whoever has control of the premises in connection with their trade or business — usually the employer, building owner, landlord or managing agent, rather than an individual tenant.

Can I do the inspection myself?

The law requires a competent contractor for fire door work. Our inspectors are UK Fire Door Training certified for exactly this reason.
